In 1992, Tennessee established a system for accountability standards for the public schools in Tennessee. In addition, the Dept. of Education is required to compile a "Report Card" for each individual school, as well as the overall county or city school system and make this information available to the public. The law was amended to match the No Child Left Behind act that set benchmarks for individual schools, school systems as a whole, and the state.
Schools and school systems that do not meet required benchmarks are assigned the status of "Target." Schools and school systems that do not meet the federal benchmark for two or more consecutive years in the same category are assigned the status of "High Priority."
